Airfare Updates - Flights to the British Virgin Islands

We are not travel agents at Northern Breezes Sailing School. However, we recognize that airfares are a critical part of your planning process in order to join us in the best cruising grounds in the world. We have been appalled at some of the ridiculous fares and options being quoted by clueless travel agents to our customers and potential customers.

Do it yourself. There are basically two routes into the British Virgins from the Midwest. You will originate from Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, Detroit or Des Moines for example. Then most people fly either to San Juan, Puerto Rico or St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. There can be any number of intermediate stops such as St. Louis, Atlanta, Dallas, etc. We generally recommend flying "anything with wings" to San Juan. Then fly any of the four or five smaller airlines to Tortola, BVI which is about a 45 minute flight from San Juan. You can also fly into St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. and either take a ferry or a ten minute flight to Tortola. You actually will land on Beef Island (EIS). Tortola and Beef Island are connected by a bridge. If you use Expedia, Orbitz or Travelocity, here are the codes you will most likely need: MSP (Minneapolis / St Paul); CHI (Chicago); SJU San Juan Puerto Rico; STT St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.; and, EIS Tortola, BVI.

Rather than quote you what we have recently found, the range you should be seeing is from a spectacular $475 on the low end to $750 or so on the higher end. When the travel agent quotes you $1,000 to $1,300 or even more. Fire the agent! They are either incompetent or worse.

We purposely schedule our trips mid-week for the simple reason that you are often able to use frequent flyer miles for all or part of your trip and / or at least obtain reasonable rates.

We will assist you via phone if you're having difficulty at no charge!

From Mpls/St. Paul Airport
, don't forget to check Sun Country leaving from HHH Terminal. If you go to St. Thomas, from St. Thomas you would take a 10 minute taxi ride to the Charlotte Amalie Harbor ferry dock. Buy a one way ticket for about $30 to Road Town, Tortola. This is about a 45 minute ferry ride. You will clear customs into the BVI when you disembark at Road Town, Tortola or West End, Tortola. See www.suncountry.com

The connectors from San Juan, PR: Prices range from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Tortola International Airport between a low of $170 to around $234 roundtrip on
American Eagle www.aa.com, Cape Air www.flycapeair.com, or LIAT www.liatairline.com.

I NEED HELP!!! Don't panic! I have booked numerous flights for customers who have trouble with online booking, computers or figuring this maze out! Relax, pick-up the phone, have your credit card handy and we'll get this done. Be happy, soon you'll be in the sun with the wind in your face and the waves gently caressing the boat.
