SAILING THE APOSTLE ISLANDS
NATIONAL SHORELINE
There are 22 Apostle Islands with 21 of the 22 islands and 12 miles of mainland shoreline that are included in the National Lakeshore Park at Lake Superior's southwest end. These forested, sheltered islands on the world's most expansive fresh water lake provides a paradise for sailors, divers & fisherman in an area rich with history. Madeline Island is the only year around inhabited island which is not part of the National Shoreline Park but it is an island most find very exciting to visit. |
|
The remaining 21 islands are basically remote with beautiful shorelines ranging from sandy beaches to heavy trees and sandstone bluffs, each breath taking. The water is crystal clear with depths of approximately 100 feet between the islands. The temperatures in the spring and fall are generally in the 60's during the day and 40's to 50's in the evenings. Summer temperatures range in the 70's and 80's during the day and the 60's in the evening making for fantastic sleeping weather while at anchor.
A typical day-sail adventure will bring you to the beginning of the Apostle Islands usually sailing most of the morning and arriving at one of the islands for lunch at anchor. Lunch can be followed by a visit to the island to explore, a swim, possibly a lighthouse tour or exploring by water with a longer return sail.
There are six islands with lighthouses; Sand Island, Devils Island, Raspberry Island, Long Island, Outer Island and Michigan Island. On a day sail it would be possible to visit Raspberry Island, Long Island or Michigan Island, all three islands have sand beaches and hiking trails as well as the lighthouses.
On overnight sails, whether you anchor out in solitude at a remote island or at Madeline Island where you can have a relaxing dinner out, listen to music or tour downtown or the parks, the sunsets are phenomenal.
Whether you spend ½ day, a
full day or a week on your sailing adventure, it will be an adventure that will be etch in
your memory and one you will want to experience time and time again. Home | The Boat | Rates | The Great Circle | Apostle Islands | Florida Keys | Contact Us DAME du LAC ©1999 Sailing Breezes Internet Magazine Mpls, MN USA - All Rights Reserved. |
