Havana Educational Adventure

Northern Breezes offers you a unique educational/people opportunity to sail to Cuba. Participants will sail aboard new 44 or 40 foot sailing catamarans to meet the people and engage in the educational purpose of discovering the land and people who influenced Ernest Hemingway to author 3 novels including The Old Man and the Sea. Besides the literary, think of the music.

Fly into Havana, Cuba. Come a few days early or stay after for educational experiences.

Ashore activities are determined by educational considerations as well as the unmitigated beauty of the unspoiled and under developed landscape and seascape. While in Cuba, explore Havana’s historic streets visiting Cathedral Square and local artists, then meet Cuban experts who will give you a tour of Hemingway’s homes. Included is Finca La Vigia, on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 most endangered places list, located in the small working-class town of San Francisco de Paula. Other options are being explored. As usual with Northern Breezes adventures, we are flexible.

Return with memories laced with the imaginative Hemingway fishing for the giant Blue Marlin. Reflect on the dynamic people and culture that shaped “Papa’s” writing in the 1940s and 50s which will now be incorporated into your "memories". The sailing yachts are as luxurious as you are likely to find in production boats.

All meals during passages are included: we will take every opportunity to eat ashore during excursions and while in the Cuban archipelago. These excursions will be your responsibility. All on shore meals are at the guests' expense.


This is an American Sailing Association refresher course tailored to your previous certifications and experience. There are no mandatory prerequisite levels other than a desire to learn Cuba and gain valuable sea time with Captain Thom Burns. Thom is an Atlantic crossing veteran, senior offshore instructor and navigation instructor. You are in good, safe hands!

Cost of the Cuba 7-day educational journey is estimated to be $4,295 per couple, $4,295 single/whole cabin, or $2,195 single/shared cabin. Air fare is not included.

Cuban cities such as Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and particularly its capital, Havana, are renowned for their architectural richness and scenic beauty. We are well connected to small group Cuban guides who are extremely helpful and not wildly expensive.

Both Trinidad and Havana can be part of this educational adventure for example. When you are ashore for three days we strongly recommend that you stay in Casa Particulares which are people's houses. Many can be viewed on airbnb.
