Captain Tom Kershner
Tom used to travel to the
Caribbean every winter and wonder why there were so
many sailboats.
Finally, he decided it was time to figure
this out.
Since then he has spent his winter vacations
on a sailboat.
Tom became an Instructor for
Hoofers’ Sailing Club at the University of Wisconsin
in 2005 and then an ASA instructor for Northern
Breezes Sailing School in 2006.
Each year he teaches an average of 70
students over 700 hours of on-the-water instruction.
Tom teaches ASA vacation courses for Northern
Breezes in the British Virgin Islands as well as
Coastal Navigation in Madison during the winter.
Tom has competed in the Chicago
to Mackinac and Trans-Superior yacht races and has
placed 1st and 2nd in the
Cruising Divisions.
Besides his annual charters in the Caribbean,
Tom has chartered yachts in Croatia and on Lake
Superior.
One of his students, Jenn,
shares this: “From tying a knot to flying a
spinnaker, Tom has taught me how to sail. His
‘know-how’ and enthusiasm has encouraged me not only
to pursue the cruising and racing side of sailing,
but also to pass on that knowledge to the next
sailor!”
