IMTRA Sells Atlantis

New Bedford, Massachusetts—-Imtra Corporation announced today that it has sold its Atlantis Weather gear division to Cran Barry, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts. Imtra, which had purchased Atlantis from The Timberland Corporation in 1988, is a nation importer/distributor and marketing organization for marine hardware and equipment; Atlantis was the company’s only clothing line. Cran Barry manufactures Hatchers Team jackets, which are well-known in the team apparel market, and other sports clothing and equipment. The acquisition allows Cran Barry/Hatchers to diversify their line of high-performance outdoor sportswear.

In making the announcement, Nat Bishop, President of Imtra, stated: "Atlantis has been a profitable product line for Imtra. But, as our hardware and equipment business expanded, we simply could not give clothing the time and attention it requires. Even with its marine orientation, Atlantis has increasingly different sales channels than the other major brands we manufacture or represent throughout the United States."

Founded in 1973, Atlantis is credited with a string of innovations in waterproof foul weather gear designed for use at sea. These products were routinely tested for quality and reliability, and used by round-the-world sailors, America’s Cup racers and serious mariners. The line was augmented by inshore/coastal weather gear, pile garments and accessories which defined the marine ‘look’ for the past three decades.

Cran Barry has acquired the Atlantis name, inventory and designs and will be assuming sales management immediately. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
