NORTH AMERICAN PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE
SAILS INTO NANTUCKET IN ITS SIXTH SEASON TO CELEBRATE THE 38TH ANNUAL OPERA HOUSE CUP
Officine Panerai celebrates partnership with Sail 4 Cancer, commemorating the first-ever North American circuit for
vintage and classic yachts
August 2010, New York, NY – Marking its sixth consecutive season, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge is pleased to be celebrating the 38th annual Opera House Cup August 13th-15th, 2010 in Nantucket, MA. Eager vintage and classic yacht owners and skippers are gearing up for what promises to be one the most exciting classic regattas ever held in the U.S., as the Opera House Cup is the second stop in what is now the first-ever vintage and classic racing circuit for North America. Following the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 6-8, Marblehead, MA) and preceding to the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta (September 3-5, Newport, RI), the Opera House Cup is, for many, the pinnacle of American classic wooden boat regattas.
Founded in 1972 by the island’s legendary restaurateurs Gwen Gaillard and maitre d’ Chick Walsh, the Opera House Cup was the East Coast’s first all-wooden, single-hull classic boat regatta to welcome all classes of boats to compete for a single trophy. The contagious spirit of camaraderie upon which the event was founded is still the modus operandi of the event 38 years later. The OHC has grown steadily since its inception and, once again, will showcase a large compilation of gleaming vintage wooden yachts on the backdrop of the stunning Nantucket Sound. The Opera House in its entirety has become the primary fundraiser for island youth programs through Nantucket Community Sailing. The race’s original prize – an old silver wine bucket donated by Gwen -- still serves as the OHC’s perpetual trophy, to which a plaque inscribed with the winner’s name, is added every year. The overall circuit winner also takes home a much-coveted limited edition Panerai watch which is custom-designed each year for the sailors who compete. For 2010, the winner will receive a Radiomir Regatta 1/8th Second Titanio – 47 mm (PAM343).
Officine Panerai’s annual sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge celebrates the many parallels between the sport of classic yachting and the making of Panerai timepieces. Skilled yachtsmen and classic yachting enthusiasts hold a special devotion to their vessels and to the sport of sailing that is akin to the loyalty and passion that Panerai owners have for their watches and for the intricate world of haute horlogerie. Every classic yacht pays homage to the age-old art of sailing and the skills for the sport that have been handed down through generations. It is therefore an ideal counterpart to the world of high quality watchmaking, where the emphasis on tradition and quality are not the result of good fortune, but the outcome of persistence, knowledge and longevity.
Introducing Sail 4 Cancer
To commemorate the first-ever North American PCYC racing circuit, Officine Panerai is giving back to some of the communities that host the PCYC by partnering with Sail 4 Cancer, a charity which provides healing and respite days for those who have endured or are currently enduring cancer treatments, and with the local cancer hospitals and clinics who lovingly treat these patients on a daily basis.
For 2010, beginning with Marblehead and Nantucket, Panerai will invite esteemed oncologists and cancer researchers for a “PCYC/Sail 4 Cancer Day” a day of sailing or racing on a classic yacht while having the opportunity to speak to members of the press about their latest research and success stories. Furthermore, Officine Panerai will provide a donation on behalf of the local hospitals and clinics which will allow cancer-stricken individuals of all ages and their caretakers to enjoy relaxing and rejuvenating days of sailing on a beautiful vessel throughout the entire sailing season.
