Mathew Belcher - Groomed for the Gold
By Lynn Fitzpatrick
Mat Belcher won a Gold medal in
2000. It wasn't an Olympic Gold
Medal, however it was enough to get him to the Olympics. By winning the 420 World Championship
Belcher impressed Australia's Olympic Committee so much that the young athlete
carried the Olympic flag during the Closing Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic
Games.
"It gave me a taste for the
Olympics and it was the first time that I met Victor (Kovalenko)," said 27-year
old Mathew Belcher, who, following four World Cup events this year is the top
470 skipper. (Read More, Click Here) |

Australia's Golden Boys, Mathew
Belcher and Malcolm Page are warmed up and ready to sail their fifth ISAF
World Cup Sailing event this year.
The team is #1 in the World Cup standings and ready to take on a 93-boat
fleet of the world's top 470 Men's teams.
From Mat Belcher - Top 470 skipper on ISAF's World Cup tour
"It's good to have
Mal in the front of the boat with me again. We've worked the rust out and have had good training with
big fleets this week. We're making
the most of our time in Holland and treating this as our warm-up for the World
Championship, which is in The Hague in July."
From Malcolm Page - 4-time 470 World Champion, 2008 Olympic Gold
Medalist
"We're feeling
good. We've adjusted to wearing
layers of thermals under our wetsuits again. For good measure and good luck I'm cooking up my famous
chorizo tonight. Every other
night we've had lots of guests. I
can't figure out why they've abandoned us tonight."
From Coach Victor Kovalenko - 5 Olympic Gold, 3 Olympic Bronze and 12 470
World Championship titles to his credit
"This is Mat and
Mal's first anniversary together.
It is also their first serious regatta in Europe together this
year. We refer to the Palma
regatta as Malcolm's honeymoon regatta, because he had just gotten married and
didn't sail. Scheduling conflicts
kept him out of the Hyeres Regatta and here we are."
"The boat's in
good shape and all of the stickers are applied to the 470 and my coach boat, so
we're ready to go."
