2010 Audi Invitational Brings Melges 32 Sportboat Racing & Entertainment
Porto Cervo, 24 June 2010 - The Audi Invitational’s ability to deliver fast racing, fun and plenty of on-the-water action begins today in Porto Cervo, the same venue as the 2009 Melges 32 World Championship.
Attendees will receive a warm welcome from host club Yacht Club Costa Smeralda as Audi desired to collect one of the more technical and performance driven, one design fleets in the world — the Melges 32.
For more than seven years, the Audi Invitational has become a marquee event for not only the best sailors, but also for many familiar faces, athletes, personalities and celebrities from the entertainment world aspire to participate and be involved with this unprecedented regatta. On the docks of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda expects several ski champions such as Alessandro Pittin (Vancouver, Olympic bronze medal in the Nordic combined), Manfred Moelgg (World Cup Slalom winner, two victories) with his sister Manuela (8 World Cup podiums), Patrick Staudacher (2007 World Champion in Super G) and many others.
Godmother of the event is the beautiful Elenoire Casalegno will also board the boats in the race along with other celebrities.
From a purely competitive standpoint, racing in Porto Cervo commences on Friday and for the Melges 32 fleet will have double meaning, the Audi Invitational trophy, but also the points for the 2010 Sailing Series, the third event of the season. Leading the circuit is Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica. whose win in Lerici and hard defense has allowed him to hang on. The Audi Invitational is a ten-day long event encompassing the Audi Sardinia Cup, a World Championship for teams of various nationalities from the Melges 32 class.
