Key Event Stena Match Cup Sweden in the Evolution of the World Tour

Stena Match Cup Sweden is synonymous with the ISAF World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) and has been part of this professional sailing series since its inception. The match racing event is renowned for attracting the best sailor’s in the World.
Stena Match Cup Sweden is Stage 5, marking the halfway point of the 2010 World Match Racing Tour which originally served as the model for the entire Tour. This friendly and action packed event is annually hosted on the magical island of Marstrand which has developed as a natural metropolis for sailing with yacht racers returning for decades.
The Swedish event started back in 1994, gaining World Championship status later in 2007 as part of the WMRT and has now built up to be one of Sweden’s largest annual recurring sporting events. Stena Match Cup Sweden is a key event in the evolution of the Tour founded in 2000.
Marstrand is accomplished at supporting a number of different yachting disciplines having over the years organized events with; traditional regattas, ocean sailing races, World championships and sailing schools. Last year Marstrand was selected as a pit stop for the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), one of the most famous and challenging offshore sailing events in the World. After a thrilling finish to leg 8 of the VOR from Galway to Marstrand the teams spent 4 days relaxing before the re-start.
2010 sees the biggest entry ever for Stena Match Cup Sweden with a record overall men’s and women’s combined entry of 26 skippers. This marks the 16th edition of this Swedish event which is a real favourite amongst the match racing fraternity.
