ST. MARY’S WINS
2002 ICSA/GILL NORTH AMERICAN COED DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIP
The third and final day of competition at the 2002 ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association)/Gill North American Coed Dinghy Championship produced solid racing with numerous lead changes. After pulling themselves from eighth into first-place on day two of the series, the Seahawks of St. Mary’s College of Maryland clinched the title with a seven-point margin. This is the Seahawks second title, having last won the championship in 2000. Harvard University placed second with 210 points, followed by the University of Hawaii, with 219.
Harvard entered the final B-division set with a two-point lead over St. Mary’s, followed by Hawaii another two points back. After race 17B, St. Mary’s took a three-point lead over Harvard. At the start of 18B, the final race, both St. Mary’s and Harvard started prematurely and had to return to restart. St. Mary’s B-division team, senior Brent Jansen (Weston, Mass.) and junior Galen Largay (Woodbury, Conn.) battled back to a seventh place finish to clinch the regatta.
St. Mary’s junior Danny Pletsch (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Jen Vandemoer (Centerville, Mass.) took second-place in A-division with 112 points. The duo won race 17A and placed second in 18A, setting up B-division’s comeback to win the overall title. Jansen and Largay won B-division with 95 points.
Harvard University won the ICSA North American Team Race Championship last week and led for much of the final day’s racing. In A-division, senior Sean Doyle (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and junior Michelle Yu (Mountain View, Calif.) placed third with 113 points. Juniors Clay Bischoff (Miami, Fla.) and Lema Kikuchi (Bethesda, Md.) were second in B-division with 97 points. Doyle, Yu and Bischoff are returning All-Americans.
The University of Hawaii Rainbows, enjoying the advantage of racing in their home waters, matched their school’s best record at this championship (previously set in 1993) with a third-place finish overall. Freshman Bryan Lake (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Jennifer Warnock (San Diego, Calif.) won A-division with 80 points, 32 points ahead of their nearest competition. The Rainbows’ B-division placed ninth with 139 points. Senior Molly O’Bryan (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Sarah Hitchcock (South Dartmouth, Mass.) sailed all races except 5B and 6B, when freshman Joey Pasquali (Santa Cruz, Calif.) teamed with junior Lindsay Peters (Sioux Falls, S.D.). O’Bryan is a 2002 Women’s All-American skipper. Hitchcock received All-American Crew honors last year.
Four races were sailed in each of the two divisions the final day for a total of 18 races per division. The Keehi Lagoon on the south shore of Oahu was popular with competitors and spectators for its 80-degree air and water temperatures and the breeze which ranged from 5-15 knots throughout the event.. "The top three teams were so close, it was great," said ICSA President Mitch Brindley. The regatta was held at the Honolulu Community College Marine Education and Training Center. Sailors raced Vanguard Flying Juniors (FJs) provided by the hosts. Vanguard Sailboats (Portsmouth, R.I.) is a partner in the ICSA Growth and Development Project.
Sixteen teams qualified to sail in this championship through regional eliminations, and two were awarded at-large berths. Teams entered in the ICSA/Gill North American Coed Dinghy Championship at Keehi Lagoon, Honolulu, Hawaii: Boston College (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), College of Charleston (Charleston, S.C.), Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.), Eckerd College (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.), Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Va.), St. Mary's College (St. Mary’s City, Md.), Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif.), Texas A & M (College Station, Texas), Texas A & M Galveston (Galveston, Texas), Tufts University (Medford, Mass.), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, N.Y.), U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.), University of Hawaii (Honolulu, Hawaii), University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.), University of Washington (Seattle, Wash.), University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wis.), Yale University (New Haven, Conn.).
