Through the building and use of wooden boats, the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, located on the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia, helps at-risk youth turn their lives around and provides families, community groups and schools with meaningful educational, social and recreational experiences. Full-time apprentices earn their GEDs and prepare for a career in the building trades. The latest additions to the program include vocational training in green construction, a summer program and an after-school program.

Weeks was the Foundation's first executive director before his unexpected passing in 2006. Exceptionally smart and demanding, he was known for treating everyone with the same respect and full attention, and the Foundation's programs and people benefited tremendously from his leadership. His love of boats became a force to transform lives adrift, which remains today at the core of the organization's mission.

One of the boats recently constructed in the program, a 17-foot, four-passenger "Challenge Wherry" rowboat, will be raffled off. Designed after Grand Banks fishing dories, the sturdy boat is light enough to be car-topped and its Okume mahogany plywood and Atlantic yellow cedar construction make her a real head-turner on the water. To purchase raffle tickets in advance, call 703-549-7078.
